In 2013 I was commissioned to do a visual documentation for the University of Johannesburg. The photographs were to be used for a new coffee table book that the University would be distributing to all South African libraries, as well as international governmental organisations and universities, including the University of Lucerne, Oxford and Harvard.
The challenge of this project was the diversity of images required to shoot. I had to document not only the student life, but come up with intriguing landscape and architectural work, and most importantly charismatic portraiture. The project scope was huge as it covered four campuses and over a dozen portraits. The body of work produced took over a year to complete, bearing in mind the logistics of organising and scheduling with the vast array of academic departments, people, and locations.
The book was officially launched by Prof Ihron Rensburg, Vice-Chancellor and Principal, UJ and Prof Roy Marcus, chair of UJ Council at the UJ Alumni and Convocation Day on Thursday, 29 May 2014.
"UJ Perspectives", illustrates, to its stakeholders, UJ’s commitment to higher education fuelled by constant innovation. The first two signed copies were given to Adv. Thuli Madonsela and well-known South African broadcast personality Leanne Manas.
During the 25th MACE (Marketing, Advancement, and Communication in Education) the book, UJ Perspectives won the 2014 Merit Award in the publication category.
